MEAT

This is an experimentation in writing a far future space opera. I’m hoping to flush these characters out and make this into a full length novel. Maybe even a series.

BAK BALANCED ON TOP of the bar stool, careful to keep his long reptilian tail wrapped around the legs. His scales raised in nervousness as he kept an eye out for anyone who might place a foot on its sensitive end. Quick waitresses, with arms full of drinks and food, swept by to deliver their payloads to the boisterous tables filling the pub.

Various patrons lounged in species-specific chairs and booths, accommodating their bulk and shapes. A few hung from overhead bars with prehensile feet while they ate with their hands. Or was it hanging from their hands while they ate with their feet? Bak was undecided.

"These guys have the best chicken club this side of Orion," Charlie said hopping up onto a nearby stool. His small human frame was modest in comparison to Bak's reptilian bulk.

Bak snarled through his teeth and Charlie's implanted translator kicked in, converting the noises to words, "Next time we eat at Chokho's."

Charlie grabbed the drink menu and flipped it open, "Oh, c’mon. Really? That place is greasy. You got the craps from that place last time."

"Was because I ate too much meat. Was too good. Tasted like home."

"It stank like it was rotten."

Bak smiled and a bit of drool formed at the corner of his mouth. Even though both were crewmates on the same ship it still made Charlie nervous seeing the razor-sharp teeth. It reminded him of a shark's smile. he looked away and scanned through the menu. "Oh, they have beer now, and onion rings."

"Probably nothing I can eat," Bak stated reluctantly.

"You can eat this food. It's just not your favorite. Try something different for once."

A slender waitress with a body as thick as Charlie's arm stepped over to their table and tossed down some coasters. "What are we having boys?" The sound of her natural voice was muted over her translator's interpretation. Her skin reminded Charlie of perfectly smooth blue plastic, giving her a doll-like appearance when combined with the saucer-shaped eyes, and tiny mouth.

Charlie looked her over and was trying to determine if he was attracted to her or indifferent.

She looked at him and leaned in. Flaps where he assumed nostrils would be flickered. "You are a human? We don't get many here at the station. Welcome. This is very rare."

"Thanks," Charlie said, "What's the special today?"

She paused for a moment and her skin color changed, paling. Charlie had seen this in many species but he was unsure of what it meant in hers.

"We have some battered fish, freshly pulled from the ponds this morning," the waitress turned to Bak and continued with a lowered tone, "And human roast." She turned back to Charlie and held up her hands, "Simulated of course. Tank grown meat. Nonsentient. We're legal here."

Bak smiled at Charlie, "Oh, let's get the roast. I've heard it's great here." He closed the menu with an enthusiastic slap of his clawed hands.
